Biodynamics Comes to Life in Mudgee

What began as a conversation about soil has now taken root in practice.
On the 9th & 10th April, Watershed Landcare hosted its first two-day Biodynamics Course at LOWE Wines, welcoming 19 participants for an immersive and highly practical learning experience. Led by long-time educator Hamish Mackay, the course brought together gardeners, farmers and landcarers to explore how biodynamic principles can be applied at any scale.
Across the two days, participants moved between theory and hands-on practice, learning how to build fertile, resilient soils through composting, preparations and close observation of natural systems. From stirring biodynamic preparations and creating kelp brews, to working with flow forms and discussing soil ecology, the course focused on making biodynamics tangible and accessible.

The setting itself played an important role. As a certified biodynamic vineyard, LOWE Wines provided a living example of these principles in action, grounding the learning in a real-world context.
What stood out most was the depth of engagement. Conversations were lively, questions flowed freely, and participants brought a genuine curiosity about how to care for soil, landscape and community in more connected ways.
Feedback reflected this impact:
“I found myself taking in lots of small insights, which, in the bigger picture, have turned out to be quite transformative… I now see my entire yard as one living system that I can nurture and protect.”
“An excellent presenter, venue, organisation and great like minded people creating a safe space to share understandings.”
“I am looking forward to being part of an active local biodynamics community.”
That sense of community is already taking shape. A local Biodynamics Circle has emerged following the course, with participants keen to stay connected, share learnings and continue building skills together. Quarterly catch-ups are being explored as a way to maintain momentum and deepen practice over time.
The success of the course highlights a growing appetite for approaches that support soil health, climate resilience and regenerative land management. It also points to the value of creating spaces where people can come together, learn by doing, and build confidence in applying new ideas.
